Official WisDems Poll Observer Signup: April 1st Spring Election

This is the official signup form to be a WisDems Poll Observer for the April 1st Spring Election. Being a volunteer poll observer is the most direct way to protect voting rights in Wisconsin.

What is a Poll Observer?

Poll observers are the eyes and ears for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s Voter Protection Team inside polling locations across the state, and are the last line of defense against instances of voter suppression. You will be assigned to a polling place by our team, and will be the first to report any issues that arise (like long lines, machine problems, or voters being turned away unnecessarily), and will act as a resource for voters who may need assistance.

Logistics of Poll Observing

  • This is the official form to sign up as a poll observer—once you fill this out, you’ve committed to being a poll observer, and we will assign you a polling place on Election Day!

  • We have 3 shift options for Election Day: All-Day (6:30am-8:30pm CT - this is our greatest need, please select an all-day shift if you are able to), morning (6:30am-1:30pm CT), or afternoon (1:30pm-8:30pm CT).

  • You do NOT need any previous experience or legal background to be a poll observer, and you do not need to be a Wisconsin resident!

  • Poll Observer Training will be required. As election law in Wisconsin changes, it is important that we are able to get returning poll observers up to speed on changes to the law and train all of our new volunteers!

  • Poll observers must have access to a smartphone on Election Day and have familiarity with using it.

Poll Observer Trainings

Poll Observer Training: Training is held on Zoom and lasts 75 minutes.

  • There are multiple training options held between March 11 and March 18, and you only need to attend once.

  • This training will cover rules of poll observing, election law and voting procedures. We will also have a separate technology training that is required for new observers.

Being a poll observer is a big commitment, and our staff will be there to support you through the whole process! Please only fill out this official signup form if you are ready to commit to being a poll observer on April 1st. Once you fill out this form, our team is counting on you to be there helping us protect voters. Save the date for Tuesday, April 1st on your calendar now!

Thank you for helping us protect democracy in Wisconsin! Please email us at pollobserving@wisdems.org if you have any questions.

Election Day Poll Observer Shifts
There are 3 Election Day poll observer shift options: All Day (6:30am-8:30pm - this is our greatest need), AM (6:30am-1:30pm), or PM (1:30pm-8:30pm). All times are Central Time.

Why is an All Day Shift preferred? We request that all observers who are able to do so commit to working an all-day shift. This is important for a number of reasons: it ensures there is consistent coverage at that location for the entire time polls are open, allows you build a good working relationship with the Chief Inspector, and enables us to be as efficient as possible in troubleshooting voting issues on Election Day.

You will have plenty of opportunities for breaks and meals throughout the day, and a place to sit down.

If these shifts don't work for you, we are happy to help you find other volunteer roles that better fit your schedule!

LBJ Tech Training
NEW OBSERVERS: All *new* poll observers must attend one of our LBJ Tech Trainings. At the Tech Training, you will learn how to use our voting incident reporting system called LBJ, and do a practice/'Dry Run' of reporting practice voting incidents so that you are familiar with what you need to observe and report on Election Day.

If you cannot attend either of the LBJ Tech Trainings, but still wish to participate as an observer, please email us at pollobserving@wisdems.org and we'll discuss other options with you.

RETURNING OBSERVERS: If you have been a poll observer before but want a review of using LBJ and reporting voting incidents, you are encouraged but not required to join this session!
Choose your LBJ Tech Training Session (approx. 60 minutes, on Zoom): *
How many miles are you willing to travel from your home on Election Day? (Please note we may ask you to go slightly further to ensure every high-priority polling place is covered)
*
Any other travel restrictions or things we should know?
For example: do you plan to carpool with other observers? Will you be staying somewhere other than your home for Election Day? Will you need to use public transportation instead of your own vehicle?

We do our best to accommodate requests, but cannot guarantee that every preference will be honored due to the logistics of working with so many volunteers across the state.

Please note that we cannot accommodate requests for specific polling location assignments.
Any other travel restrictions?
If you do not have any travel requests or restrictions, please leave this field blank.
Are you a lawyer or law student (not required)? *
Do you have access to a car? *
Do you have access to a smartphone you can use on Election Day? *
