AP English Literature and Composition Summer Preview
AP Literature is a challenging course for many students in their senior year. With SpringLight's preview class, students can prepare the critical reading, writing, and thinking skills in order to prepare both for the AP exam and improve preparedness for AP LIT curriculum at local high schools.

Students will:
 Guided classic literature reading: read classic novels, stories, and dramas
 Intensive reading on classic poems
 Writing assignments and feedback on writing assignments
 Heavy drill in reading comprehension, especially with regard to passage-based reading
 Development and mastery of specific strategies for writing the three AP LIT essays:
       the poetry essay,
       the prose fiction essay
       the free response essay on your chosen novel

Required Texts:
 Beloved by Toni Morrison
 Hamlet by William Shakespeare
 Selected short stories and poems to be distributed by the instructor

Description from the College Board:
AP English Literature and Composition is an introductory college-level literary analysis course. Students cultivate their understanding of literature through reading and analyzing texts as they explore concepts like character, setting, structure, perspective, figurative language, and literary analysis in the context of literary works.


*All of SpringLight's classes is online with Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic. After that we will work out a hybrid class format.

Ms. Katherine Simpson graduated Summa Cum Laude from Gordon College with a double degree in Political Science and English literature. Her writing has been published by NPR stations across the United States. Currently, she works at San Francisco's KALW. Ms. Simpson’s research and writing includes reporting on Indianapolis’ city government and a thesis on Toni Morrison. She strives to imbue a curiosity and empathy in her students. Whether she’s teaching literature or helping students revise their own writing, she hopes that her students will not only grow as learners but as people. With her help, three SpringLight students earned Gold Key awards in the 2020 Scholastic Writing awards. In her free time, she enjoys swimming and playing the harp.

*We offer the first class as a trial for this course. If you are not satisfied after the trial, you may cancel and are not required to pay any tuition for that one class only. If you would like to continue, you must pay for all classes, including the first class.
