Tell COCC: Don't Invite Lori Chavez-DeRemer to Speak at Commencement

Lori Chavez-DeRemer is one of many politicians across America who have made their hostility towards transgender individuals abundantly clear. She co-sponsored the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports act, an anti-transgender bill which would require athletes sex be recognized solely based on their reproductive biology and genetics at birth. This is a solution to a nonexistent problem that only seeks to further marginalize an already vulnerable community. Another bill Lori Chavez-DeRemer has co-sponsored is HR 5, or the "Parents Bill of Rights". This bill would require schools to provide parents with a list of reading materials in the school library as well as posting curriculum publicly. It also states parents must be notified and asked for consent before a student can change their name or gender marker at their school. This bill would obviously aim to take away the autonomy of students to explore their identity and learn new perspectives outside of their possibly intolerant household.

By signing, I stand with LGBTQIA2S+ COCC students and call upon the Senior Leadership Team and the President to rescind the college’s invitation to Lori Chavez-DeRemer to speak at commencement, due to her record of anti-LGBTQIA2S+ policies. I also support students’ calls for a student-inclusive commencement speaker selection process and for long-term institutional support for LGBTQIA2S+ students, including a cohesive LGBTQIA2S+ program and coordinator.
