THE YOUTH ARE SACRED ART EXHIBITION STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
written by Maria Elena, Founder/Executive Director, Homegirlz del Corazon and an integral member of the Youth Justice Momentum Team
The Youth Are Sacred Art Exhibition creates a space where our young people are not just included, but are given the opportunity to lead, create, dream, and tell their own stories.
At the heart of this exhibition and our vision for a Department of Youth Development (DYD) is the belief that young people deserve spaces built around who they are, not just what they have survived.
Artwork must demonstrate the importance of:
Youth-Led: Young people must have a voice in shaping the programs, opportunities, and systems created for them.
Lived Experience Guidance & Support: We must value youth lived experience while also ensuring people with lived experience are working alongside our youth, building authentic relationships rooted in understanding and trust.
Trauma-Informed & Heart-Centered: We must look beyond behaviors and labels and see the whole young person, their story, strengths, needs, and possibilities.
Let Youth Be Youth: Our young people deserve opportunities to create, laugh, dream, explore, make art, experience joy, and be full of life.
Living, Not Just Surviving: Youth development means helping young people move beyond survival and experience belonging, connection, healing, opportunity, and hope.
Our youth are more than what they have survived. They have always been sacred. When we invest in their healing, creativity, leadership, and future, we begin to heal all communities in San Diego County.
