The Fletcher Food Symposium: Cuisine and Identity in the Eastern Mediterranean, Fri. Mar. 31, 5:30-7:30pm, Mugar 200
This event seeks to capture the historical and cultural significance of Eastern Mediterranean cuisine. We will explore how the regional food reflects, shapes, and informs the East Mediterranean identity from the heart of Mesopotamia through modern Armenia to Greece. This event is part of the spring semester’s theme, entitled "The Changing Order in the Middle East: Cosmopolitanism, Nationalism, and Forced Migration." Examination of the history of regional culinary culture, in the previous empires of the Ottoman and Byzantine lands, significantly enriches this series as food plays a central component in understanding the myriad of ethnic communities in region. Food also highlights how the Eastern Mediterranean has been a nexus of trade and an amalgamation of major civilizations. This event will be contextualized in a conversation of culinary diplomacy, and promote a broader understanding of the field in international relations. We hope the Fares Center event will launch an annual food symposium to continue these conversations at Fletcher.
