If you are already comfortable with the reasons for having your business online, on a website or social media page perhaps, then feel free to skip to the next step.
What You Will Learn
this is an overview or backdrop to the reasons for using online marketing to promote your business or product.
After reading this section, anyone without prior understanding will be comfortable to move on with the training, having gained the basic terminology and reasons for getting your own business online.
About Online Marketing
It is difficult to think of a business that wouldn’t want to have a presence online these days.
As more and more consumers turn first to their smart phones, tabs or smart speakers for product information, you would be missing a very big opportunity if you were not online and being found.
89% of customers begin their buying process with an online search
The above statement is typical of the figures being touted online right now, and definitely show how consumers are more likely to find you first online, than by walking past your store door.
What are people searching for?
There are many reasons why someone would want to check your business out before visiting. the reasons would vary depending on the industry, but some reasons would be:
To find your phone number
To learn your location
To see what others are saying about you
To see your prices and how you compare to others
There are plenty of other reasons that we could think of, but the ones listed above are probably the most typical.
So, if your potential customers are looking online for a service such as yours, and they can’t find you, what is the most likely option they will take?
Will they:
Head out and look for your store anyway?
Call the business that is listed and shows up when they search online?
You might be lucky, but are you willing to take that chance?
How do you get found online
There are several ways to be found online, and you could do any, or preferably all of the following ways:
Have a business website;
Have Social Media pages on Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram for example;
On a directory site, such as Yell, or a local listing on Google My Business
Advertising on search engines such as Google or Bing!
Where to get started
Hopefully from this brief introduction, you can see it makes some sense to get your business online.
In the most part, it doesn’t need to be extravagant, and in some cases, simple works well.
Most people at this point will maybe be diving off to get a website set up, and that is extremely important of course, but it might not be the best first step.
Our main intention for being online is to get new consumers to find us and hopefully buy from our business.
So in many ways, the most important thing right now is to get the easiest, quickest and most effective option up first, and the next step will explore this very option.
What you learned in this article
The main take-out points from this article are that it is very important for your business to be found online.
It doesn’t mean you need to have online shopping, full product lists, or details about everything or anything.
It means there should be a way for your potential consumers to find you and to buy from you – not your competitors.
We encourage you to continue on with our brief lessons by heading over to the next step which is The Low Hanging Fruit. We look forward to seeing you over there.
