The Oregon Teacher Training Institute (OTTI) offers professional development courses for educators and administrators to deliver comprehensive sexuality education as part of health instruction, focusing on healthy relationships, socio-emotional learning, child abuse prevention education, and healthy sexuality throughout the lifespan. These requirements, as articulated by Oregon Department of Education's rules and standards, follow the most current research, leading national medical institutions, and Oregon Law.
Currently, our courses include:
1. Teaching Healthy Sexuality in Elementary Classrooms
This is a full day (8 hour) training on meeting Oregon’s Sexuality Education Standards and Performance Indicators and Laws, including Erin’s Law. This course introduces participants to core knowledge and skills required for teaching sexuality education, including how to answer difficult questions, how to use curriculum, and how to create inclusive learning environments for all students. Delivered in partnership with DHS, OHA, and local partners, participants will:
• Learn about the updated K-5 health standards
• Feel confident providing health instruction in elementary classrooms
• Connect with local partners and learn about new resources
2. LGBTQ2SIA+ Inclusion in Elementary Classrooms
This is a full (8 hour) or half (4 hour) training on supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans+ students in health and sexuality education instruction, and beyond. This course introduces participants to the core knowledge and skills necessary for supporting all students to learn in safe environments, and be free of discrimination, bullying, and sexual harassment related to gender identity and sexual orientation. Delivered in partnership with DHS, OHA, and local partners, participants will:
• Learn the importance of LGBT inclusivity in elementary classrooms
• Feel confident using inclusive terms and approaches in health and sexuality education
• Connect with local partners and learn about new resources
