Petition to Mayor Wheeler, Portland City Commissioners, Chair Kafoury, and Multnomah County Comissioners, Opposing Zenith and Fossil Fuel Expansion
We are deeply concerned about construction activities at the Zenith facility in Portland which may lead to expanded oil train shipments through the Pacific Northwest. Zenith’s expansion contradicts the City of Portland’s stated opposition to expanded oil train traffic by adding rail unloading infrastructure that will facilitate more frequent tar sands/crude oil shipments through Portland. Tar sands-by-rail shipments pose unaddressed, extreme risks for communities along rail lines and downstream from any potential derailment. Oil trains endanger public safety, public health, and environmental risks for communities that live close to rail lines and rely on waterways that could be contaminated from an oil train or ship spill. We urge you to use your authority to protect Pacific Northwest residents from these risks by halting the Zenith tar sands and any fossil fuel expansion in Portland.
