Working Class Representation in the Arts
We recognise that the arts have often been shaped by systemic barriers that make it harder for people from working class backgrounds to access opportunities and feel a sense of belonging.
As part of our commitment to equity and representation, we want to actively prioritise and support people from working class backgrounds. This question helps us understand more about who we are reaching, and who we may be missing. Your response is entirely voluntary and will be treated with respect and confidentiality.
What Do We Mean by Working Class?
We use “working class” to refer to people who’ve experienced economic or social barriers — such as growing up in a low-income household, receiving free school meals, living in council or social housing, being the first in their family to attend university, or needing to work from a young age.
We ask this to help address class-based inequalities in the arts and to better support those who’ve faced structural barriers. If you identify as working class (now or in the past), we welcome you to share that with us.
