Submit an entry to this form at least 4-5 weeks prior to the Thesis Exam, or before the beginning of the quarter for advancement, so that all necessary arrangements can be made (review requirements, resolve any issues, submit the committee for constitution approval, submit forms for advancement to candidacy). Not notifying the department of your MS Thesis Exam or Advancement details in time may result in the delay of the exam date.
* Advancement to candidacy is required prior to the thesis defense exam for the MS degree.
* To advance to candidacy, you need to have completed the GEPA,
and Nano or Ceng MS Thesis Plan requirements, except the thesis exam. A minimum 3.0 GPA is needed to advance or graduate. * MS Thesis Plan, 36 units: a) 5 core courses, 20 units, b) 299 Research, 12 units, and c) 1 elective course, 4 units. All courses must be letter grades, C- or better.

* Residency: Must have completed at least 3 academic quarters, where 6 units or more were completed per quarter (quarter of advancement can be counted).
Degree Completion
* Advancement to candidacy requests need to be submitted via this form in the first week of the quarter (application to candidacy forms are initiated by the Grad Coordinator, and are submitted to the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) by the Friday of week 3 of each quarter deadline). If the advancement to candidacy deadline is missed, the advancement will be for the next quarter.
* The
Thesis Committee must be approved and constituted before students can proceed with the thesis defense.
* Thesis Committee: 3 members, 2 members must be Nano/Ceng faculty. The thesis faculty advisor is the chair, and Nano/Ceng faculty.
