Letter to Kevin De Leon’s Office re: Return Bathrooms and Handwashing Stations to Toriumi Plaza
Dear Los Angeles City Councilmember De Leon and office,
We, the undersigned organizations and individuals are writing in demand to return the bathrooms and handwashing stations to Toriumi Plaza immediately. Mayor Eric Garcetti has launched yet another attack on the welfare and dignity of the unhoused residents of Little Tokyo.
On July 4th, 2021, the community discovered that the public bathrooms and handwashing stations in Toriumi Plaza had been removed. When questioned, a representative of the city admitted that the mayor’s office had allowed the lease to expire, even though dozens of residents use these services on a daily basis. Now is the time to take action, and uphold the welfare and dignity of all members of our community.
Councilmember Kevin De Leon has the power to return the bathrooms and washing stations tomorrow. All it would take from his office is a call to LA Sanitation. More than enough money to cover the cost of public bathrooms and handwashing stations is already earmarked for “beautification” efforts.
We call on Kevin De Leon to immediately return the bathrooms and handwashing stations to Toriumi Plaza! Everyone has a right to proper sanitation. This cowardly attempt to further displace the unhoused residents of Little Tokyo must be stopped.
