June 2017 Sustainability Institute Workshop RSVP
Special Topic for Youth Programs: Promoting Positive Behavior
Back by popular demand, Ramapo for Children will offer a new training to equip staff and volunteers of youth programs with the practical tools and tactics you need to promote positive behavior and promote success in the youth you serve. In this foundational workshop, participants will learn to view youth behaviors that adults find challenging through the lens of unmet needs and lagging skills. Using hands-on experiential activities, reflection questions, case studies, and role plays, participants will develop and practice techniques for meeting needs and teaching skills. Participants will leave with an organized “Toolbox” of strategies and a common language for preventing, understanding, and responding to challenging behaviors through role modeling, building relationships, clarifying expectations, establishing structures and routines, adapting for individual needs and responding, reflecting and repairing.

The workshop will be facilitated by Luis Tapia. Luis has over a decade of experience with young people and families in youth development settings. His journey from program participant to program director aids him in engaging fully with youth and those who work with them. Luis specializes in harnessing the enthusiasm and skills of his audience, promoting organizational growth through team learning, and coaching teams in managing their resources and delivering on critical organizational objectives. He has facilitated unique programs for a range of agencies in New York City, including the Department of Juvenile Justice, Harlem Children’s Zone, the Police Athletic League, Urban Dove, Union Settlement, Fresh Youth Initiatives and the Y. Luis views young people as assets to be developed, with the potential to be strong and positive change agents in our communities through the support and encouragement of the adults tasked to serve them. Luis studied Human Services at St. John’s University and is currently a Community Center Director.
