Adams Morgan Plaza Petition
Signers of the form below are petitioning the leadership in Washington DC and at Truist corporation to preserve and enhance the plaza at 1800 Columbia Road. Sharing your email, name, address, and location will also add you to the Adams Morgan for Reasonable Development Adams Morgan Plaza contact list. We will never share this information with anyone else & we will not spam you—only the occasional quality email to keep you updated.
Since the 1970's, Adams Morgan residents have openly and actively used our public easement on the private lot at 18th Street and Columbia Road NW, in the heart of Adams Morgan, Washington, DC.
This plaza space, from the face of the bank to the corner, was given to the residents of Adams Morgan as a form of reparations for decades of racist redlining in Washington, DC, Ward One, and in Adams Morgan.
Now this public easement and entire open area at 18th Street and Columbia Road NW, including the elevated porch space, is threatened with demolition to make way for a large luxury condo project that would crush the pedestrian plaza.
Despite local courts stopping the demolition of the site in 2017, a recent Superior Court decision moves the needle towards corporate interests over that of the public and Adams Morgan residents.
This pedestrian intersection is important to DC history, to the ideals of open space in urban places, and is especially important in the time of any pandemic now and in the future.
Petitioners call upon all District officials to vigorously defend the public easement and pedestrian plaza at the intersection at 18th Street and Columbia Road, NW.
We want it improved, yet remain a central community gathering space and plaza serving the residents of Adams Morgan and all visitors.
