Dear Customer,
In accordance with Washington State Department of Health
(DOH) regulations (WAC 246-290-490), the City of Orting
administers a Cross-Connection Control Program
to protect the public drinking water supply from potential sources of
contamination.
A cross-connection is any actual or potential
physical link between a potable (drinking) water system and any source
containing non-potable water, chemicals, or other substances that could
contaminate the public water supply. If pressure is lost in the water
system—for example, during a water main break or heavy usage—backflow
may occur, allowing non-potable substances to flow backward into the drinking
water system.
To minimize this risk, the Washington State DOH requires all public water
systems to conduct hazard assessments and maintain records of potential
cross-connections. Residential irrigation systems
(such as lawn sprinklers) are among the most common hazards. Commercial and
industrial properties pose additional risks due to more complex plumbing
systems and specialized water uses.
As part of our required compliance efforts, the City
of Orting is conducting a system-wide Cross-Connection Survey.
The Cross-Connection Survey on the following page must
be completed by all customers to help us identify and assess potential hazards.
Once submitted, the survey answers will go to the City
of Orting Public Works Department. A response is required from
all customers to ensure our records are accurate and to remain in compliance
with state drinking water safety regulations.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the Public
Works Department at (360) 893-9039, Monday
through Friday, between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping to protect our community’s
drinking water.
Sincerely,
Public Works Department
City of Orting
