Call for Applicants – M2-Si Educator Researcher Team

NCDPI and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) are calling for applications from both DL/I and Non-DL/I educators, instructional coaches, and administrators who have taught 3rd-5th grade science in North Carolina public schools within the past five years to serve as paid consultants on a grant-funded research and development project. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has been awarded a federal grant to develop an assessment system – the Multilingual Multimodal Science Inventory (M2-Si) – to support multilingual learners (MLs)* in science in third through fifth grades.

Eligibility Criteria

Grade 3, 4, and 5 educators who teach/have taught science to multilingual learners and who are willing to commit to the following activities:

  • Attend the NCSTA 2024 Conference November 7-8, 2024, in Winston-Salem.

  • Attend a professional development meeting and research workshop Friday, November 8, 4-6pm and Saturday November 9, 2024, 8am-5pm, in Winston-Salem. In this workshop, educators will receive training and provide us with feedback on using a rubric to evaluate 3rd-5th grade student work samples in the science content area.

Participants will receive:

  • Registration to attend the 2024 North Carolina Science Teachers Association (NCSTA) Professional Development Institute (PDI) November 7-8.

  • A stipend of $1500 for attendance and participation in conference and workshop activities November 7-9.

  • Travel costs for attendance. Hotel costs will be paid up front; all other travel costs will be reimbursed according to NCDPI travel reimbursement policies.

Please note that funding does not cover substitute teachers.

We encourage educators, instructional coaches, and administrators from all stages of their career to apply. Final selection of consultants will be made according to the research needs of the grant. If you're eligible, interested, and available, please apply by September 1, 2024.

* As of March 21, 2022, NCDPI shifted to using "English Learner" for policy and legislation purposes and "Multilingual Learner" for all other purposes.

**Note that educators who are compensated by their district to attend the conference will waive the stipend.
