Each day begins with a morning assembly including snacks, announcements, skits, and warm up activities like "punk rock aerobics". After assembly, instrument instructors teach guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard—the assigned instrument is based on the campers' choices in this app. No musical experience is required.
Campers and volunteers enjoy a family style lunch together, then watch...dance to....and sing along with a local music performance, ending in an open Q&A, where campers can as the performer(s) questions about their art, life, identities, etc!!
Campers will also participate in two workshops a day, one before lunch and one after lunch. Workshops are designed to cultivate discussions about our experiences with the world, as well as delve further into musical skills. Campers participate in creative and empowering workshops centered around DIY creativity, social justice, writing, image/identity, and more!
Campers are formed into bands on day one and practice their original song(s) each day after lunch and workshops. Each band will work collaboratively with the guidance and mentorship of a volunteer band coach and counselor. The camp week ends on Saturday with a public showcase where the youth perform their songs.

~Statement of diversity/Non-discrimination policy~
Girls Rock Jacksonville values diversity of age, race, economic status, gender expression, size, physical ability, developmental ability, musical interests, learning styles, nationality, religion, thought, citizenship status, and sexual orientation. We promote respect and do not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, or other discriminatory behavior or expression.
~Volunteer Training and Orientation~
We try to provide our volunteers with comprehensive training and orientation for camp. Dates have not been decided but attendance at our training and orientation sessions is mandatory. As soon as we confirm dates for these sessions, we will let you know via email.
** Background checks are performed on volunteers to ensure that none of our volunteers have been involved in crimes that would put our youth at risk. Having a prior record does not automatically disqualify you from volunteering. So, if you have any questions or concerns about a background check, please call Sarah Humphreys (904) 208-0382 or Laila Howard (317) 515-1109. To ease the burden of expense, we may ask volunteers to pay for all or part of their background checks, if they can, which could be up to $35 **
~ Accessibility Info~
We feel strongly about ensuring that camp is accessible to anyone who wants to share their summer with us and our brilliant youth. Camp can be a really intense week on your mind, body, and spirit. There are large groups of people, loud noises, some areas are not scent free, most (but not all) of the campus is ADA compliant, the days are long, gear is heavy, the youth can require a lot of attention. If you think you may not be able to volunteer due to disability, mental health needs, financial restraints, time commitments, or child care needs but you would still like to be a part of Girls Rock Jacksonville summer camp, please contact us so we can accommodate your needs. We will try everything in our capacity to meet your needs!
