Chalk Art Rules and Regulations
Where is the Chalk Art Competition?
The Chalk Art Competition is held on Saturday, October 12th during Peanut Fest, at the Suffolk Executive Airport. The competition begins at 10:00am and ends at 2:00pm.
Who can participate?
The competition is divided into four divisions. The divisions are: elementary school, middle school, high school, and adult. Each division will be judged together. A first, second, and third place will be selected from each division.
What kind of art can I create?
All art must coincide with the 2019 Peanut Festival's theme "Let the Sun Shine, It's Peanut Fest Time!". Art must be of good taste, with lewd artwork strictly prohibited. If a participant is observed creating lewd or offensive artwork, they will be excused from the competition. Political, commercial advertising through artwork, and stenciling is also prohibited.
How is the competition judged?
The competition is judged by the Peanut Fest Queen and her Court. The Queen and Court will be given a score sheet for each participant and judge the artwork based on a 5-point scale in the categories of first impression, portrayal of contest theme, creativity, and use of color. Judging decisions are final.
Is there a Prize?
Yes! Cash prizes in first, second, and third places will be awarded in each division. An honorable mention will be awarded in each category as well. Winners will be officially announced at 6:00pm on the day of competition. You do not have to be present to win. Contact the Peanut Festival Office to claim your prize.
Do I have to bring my own chalk and space to work?
No! Standard sidewalk chalk will be provided, however, participants are welcome to bring their own. Participants will also be given a 2'x4' plaster board on which to create their work.
What happens with the art I create?
All award winning art is left on display for the remainder of Peanut Festival in the Suffolk Art Gallery tent. All other participants are welcome to claim their artwork after winners have been announced. Artwork displayed in the Suffolk Art Gallery tent is available for pick-up on the final day of Peanut Fest from 2-4pm.
Can I preregister?
Yes! Preregistration is open through September 21st. Preregistration is open to the first 20 applicants. All others can register the morning of the contest beginning at 10am. Registrations will be taken until all 30 spots are full. Those who preregister will be given, or mailed, a Peanut Festival Admission Ticket good for the day of competition. Registration can be completed online or in person at the Suffolk Art Gallery at 118 Bosley Avenue, Suffolk VA, 23434. Call the Gallery at 757-514-7284 with any questions.
What else do I need to know?
All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver on the day of competition, all minors will require a parent or guardian signature. Digital photographs of the artwork will be taken and used for future publicity.
Never submit passwords through Google Forms.
