Crew Member Job Application for Lardner the Gardener, LLC

Job Posting: Gardeners, Landscapers, Horticultural Technicians

Join our team at Lardner the Gardener, LLC, a boutique gardening business located in Troy, MI. We specialize in comprehensive gardening services -- no lawn mowing, irrigation, or tree trimming here. As a woman-owned small business, we prioritize work/life balance and offer flexible scheduling. We are currently hiring gardeners, landscapers, and horticultural technicians for the 2026 season.

We are seeking passionate individuals who love gardening to fill multiple positions. This role entails 24-32 hours per week, subject to weather conditions, with starting compensation ranging from $18 to $23 per hour, depending on skills and experience. Previous horticulture or outdoor work experience is required, and a willingness to learn is essential.

At Lardner the Gardener, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace. We encourage individuals of all backgrounds to apply, and we strictly prohibit discrimination or harassment based on age, race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability.

Responsibilities:

  1. Install landscaping and gardens for both residential and commercial clients.
  2. Perform routine garden maintenance tasks such as weeding, pruning, planting, and transplanting various flora; applying mulch, compost, and topsoil; and completing other gardening or landscaping duties as assigned.
  3. Assist in the loading and unloading of tools and supplies for each job.
  4. Communicate effectively and respectfully, upholding LTG's cultural standards.
  5. Employ critical thinking and problem-solving skills while adhering to basic horticultural standards (e.g., weed identification, mulching techniques).

Required Abilities:

  1. Strong commitment to environmental stewardship, supporting our efforts to combat climate change through organic and sustainable practices.
  2. Basic understanding of ergonomic principles and ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including shrub removal, lifting heavy compost, topsoil, or mulch, and other strenuous activities.
  3. While the capability to lift 50 pounds is preferred, it is important that all applicants be able to bend, twist, kneel, dig, work for extended periods, endure repetitive hand and arm motions, and handle delicate tasks such as planting small seedlings.
  4. Possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  5. Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends to accommodate weather-related delays.
  6. Flexibility in scheduling and ability to work varying hours throughout the season.

IMPORTANT: Candidates must enjoy and be able to sustain physically demanding outdoor work in various weather conditions.

Required Qualifications or Experience:

  1. Prior experience in outdoor work or gardening.

Desired Qualifications or Experience:

  1. Certification as a Master Gardener or completion of the Smart Gardening course.
  2. Experience in cultivating perennial gardens.
  3. CGIP certification.
  4. Involvement in community gardens.

Completion of this application should take approximately 20 minutes. All questions must be answered, and honesty is valued over the "correct" response.
