Thank you for your interest in adopting a kitten or cat from SHAID! Please read the following information carefully before submitting your application:

  • Applications will only be accepted online for newly posted kittens, same-day adoptions are not available

  • Selected applicants will be contacted within 3 business days to schedule a meet-and-greet.

  • Adult cats are available for adoption by application or visiting SHAID directly. ***Please note: We may/may not be able to accommodate drop-in adoptions depending on pre-scheduled appointments and staff availability.***

  • We do not adopt un-spayed female kittens into homes with un-neutered male cats and vice versa

  • Adoption Fee:  Kittens(under 1 YEAR): $450, Cats(1-10 Years): $375, Senior Cats(10+ Years): $325

    • Includes: vaccines, flea/deworming treatment, FIV/FeLV testing, future spay/neuter with microchip (spay/neuter/microchip appointment will be booked by SHAID staff when kittens are 5-6 months old)

    • we accept debit, credit, cash– sorry no checks!

***PLEASE NOTE: We sometimes receive way more great applications than we have kittens and we do our best to make the best matches possible for all involved! If you are not selected for your first pick– please try back for another furry friend!

Adoption Criteria:
● Our shelter is located in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia - all adoptions must be completed in-person, by appointment. 
● Adopters must be 21 years or older and able to provide proof of identification and stable housing.
● All kittens must be adopted as indoor-only pets
● Kittens under 6 months old are ideally (BUT NOT ONLY) adopted:
     ○ As a pair, or
     ○ Into a home with an existing resident cat under 8 years of age– the age of additional pets is negotiable provided the potential adopter has a well thought out plan in place to address the needs of both the kitten and older cat
● Exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis based on prior kitten experience, home environment, and household dynamics at the discretion of staff

ADOPTION FEES: 

Kittens under 1 year: $450, Cats 1 year –  10 years: $375, Senior Cats 10 years+ $275     

At the time of adoption, your new friend will have at minimum it's first vaccine, parasite treatment, FeLV/FIV testing and microchip completed, and will be spayed/neutered if over 6 months of age.

Your adoption fee does also include a booster vaccine, 2nd parasite treatment, and spay/neuter procedure (if not already completed); for us to fully cover the costs of these services, they must be completed by one of our partner veterinarians in the Bridgewater area. At the time of adoption we will let you know of any outstanding appointments your new friend may have, or contact you at a later date when the appointment is booked by us. 

If it is more convenient for the adopter, additional services can be completed at their own vet, but SHAID cannot reimburse exam and vaccines fees, and only a portion of spay/neuter fees.

Ownership Contingency Plan 

SHAID understands that unexpected issues may arise during the life of you and your new pet. To ensure the long-term care and well-being of animals adopted through SHAID and prevent these pets from re-entering a shelter at a future date, adopters are required to leave a name and number of a person that would be responsible if an unexpected circumstance arose requiring the cat to be rehomed, that does not live in the same home as the adopter.  

SHAID reserves the right to contact this person before the adoption is finalized.
