Wake Alternative Break 2020 Leader Application
The Wake Alternative Break (WAB) has been a program at Wake for more than 15 years and is loosely modeled on the nationwide Break Way program. This volunteer experience is not only about serving the community, but building community with new people, having fun, and delving deep into a social issue with folks working on the ground.

WAB is made for students, led by students. We are looking for passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic student leaders interested in service to lead this year's WAB Trips. All transportation and on-sight leadership is performed by student leaders. Participants should discuss this with their families or mentors in advance of applying to participate. This opportunity is open to all upper class students (2nd year +) regardless of past WAB program participation, travel, or service experience.

The 2020 WAB program cost is $350. This includes transportation, housing, and a meal stipend to defray the cost of food for the entire week. Accepted leaders MUST pay half the cost of the program fee ($175). If the cost of the trip or the payment schedule is a barrier for participation or leadership in WAB, students should still apply and contact Deb Marke at marked@wfu.edu to discuss funding or alternate payment options.

Leader applications will be accepted through Monday, November 18th .

Leader Expectations:
1. Leaders will recruitment for their WAB site.

2. Once a site is at full capacity (i.e. leaders have recruited all participants), leaders will meet with the entire trip team 3 times before the trip. These meetings will be a space where the group will plan out details, determine community expectations, learn more about their volunteer assignment, and get to know one another to be the most effective volunteers possible. It is the leaders' responsibility to facilitate pre-trip meetings.

3. All WAB Leaders will be required to attend two, two hour training sessions with other WAB Leaders. The training will include risk management, facilitation tips, critical reflection, cultural competence, financial management, and critical community building.

4. During the trip, leaders will facilitate daily reflections.

5. Upon return, WAB groups will participate in a WAB celebration, where they will creatively share their reflections.
