Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad Ride Along Program
Thank you for your interest in CARS. A ride along allows community members (ages 16+) to observe the delivery of emergency care by our squad to those in the Charlottesville and Albemarle area. We hope that your time observing with CARS is enjoyable and helps you decide if being an EMT is right for you.

When You Arrive...
Stay engaged with the Crew! The crew captain will make truck assignments at the beginning of shift, so learn about your ambulance with the crew members. This always occurs after the beginning of new shifts and after calls that require a lot of equipment. This will help you better understand the equipment we carry as well as where these items are located. Do NOT be afraid to ask questions about what something is or how we use it!

During your shift, not only will you have the opportunity to talk to our members about their experiences but you also will be able to do your homework, access the internet, watch TV, as well as nap or sleep when there are no calls to answer. CARS provides all bed linens.
Expectations
No alcohol or drug consumption for at least 12 hours prior your ride-along. This includes prescription drugs that may cause drowsiness or impair the ability to drive or operate machinery.

- Act appropriately, no horse-playing or cursing!
- Speak up if you're asked to do something you're uncomfortable with
- Refer questions from family members or bystanders to your crew
- Hold your questions until after the call is complete
- Maintain patient confidentially as defined by HIPAA
- Wear your seatbelt at all times unless otherwise directed
- Do not wander off during the call

The on-duty crew captain has the right to send you home if deemed necessary for whatever reason.
