Innovation Booster on Sport, Human Rights and Leadership

This questionnaire has been designed by the Centre for Sport and Human Rights, in collaboration with ThinkSport, as part of the Innovation Booster Sport & Physical Activity powered by Innosuisse. The Centre is currently leading an initiative to find innovative solutions to leadership challenges at the intersection between Sport and Human Rights. You can find more information about this project here.

One of the current challenges in decision-making in sport relates to a lack of consultation with individuals and groups that will potentially be impacted by these decisions, such as athletes, coaches, officials, sports administrators, fans, volunteers, workers, journalists, community members of a mega-sporting event host city, etc. Decisions can be related to the day-to-day of sport, such as internal and external policies of a sports organisation, rules changes and interpretations, eligibility regulations, anti-doping, career development, athlete voice and activism. They can also refer to issues in and around a mega-sporting event, such as sponsorship and broadcasting agreements, construction, supply chain, mobility, housing and hospitality, safety and security policies, and legacy plans, to name a few.

How can sport bodies and sporting event organisers better consult and engage with potentially affected groups and other relevant stakeholders throughout the decision-making process?

To answer this question, we plan to do a benchmark mapping and research exercise. We want to invite every person and organisation, in every sector or industry (it doesn't have to be related to sport at this point), to tell us about good practices they are aware of, of consultation with potentially affected groups and other relevant stakeholders. They don't have to be perfect to be mapped. This questionnaire aims to identify and understand processes, challenges, lessons learned and replicable practices across industries.

If your organisation (or another organisation you know about) has consulted with potentially affected groups and other stakeholders as part of its decision-making process, we want to hear from you. We are particularly interested in learning about:

  • The design and implementation of the consultation process.

  • What worked well in the process and you consider good practice.

  • The challenges, barriers, or limitations faced in the consultation and the lessons learned.

  • How much the organisation could incorporate input from the consultation into policies, practices and decisions.

  • Any public report or news media documenting the process and results.

Later, these will inform the creation of a digital tool, tailored for sports bodies and sporting events organisers, to facilitate their process of consulting in a meaningful way with individuals and groups that can be potentially affected by their decisions.

Please note that by answering the following questions, you agree that your answers will be accessed and used by the Centre for Sport and Human Rights and its partners to inform this research and mapping project and the design of a digital tool.

The Centre will treat any answers linked to personal or confidential information carefully and will not be publicly shared. Good practices identified will not be linked to your name or organisation without your consent.

You will be asked to add your contact information and indicate if you wish to be further involved in this process or informed of its outcomes (e.g. digital tool launch). Thank you for taking the time to collaborate on this important mapping exercise!
