The employees of the Department of Residence Life (represented by CUPE Local 3906 Unit 4) are the backbone of the First-Year Experience at McMaster University. These workers are essential to creating the safe, supportive, and inclusive living environments that parents, families, and students trust when they invest in the residence experience.
Despite the essential nature of their work, these employees are subject to a number of harmful practices, including but not limited to:
Hazardous working conditions, including mould, bed bug and insect infestations, among other environmental hazards;
Frequent incidents of workplace harassment and sexual violence, posing significant risks to the health and well-being of Residence Life workers; and
Below average compensation compared to similar roles at other Ontario institutions.
These workers deserve fairness.
We, the undersigned university stakeholders, stand in solidarity with CUPE Local 3906 Unit 4 in their fight for a fair collective agreement. We call on McMaster University to support a fair collective bargaining process and a collective agreement that:
Ensures a fair living wage is paid for all hours worked by CUPE Local 3906 Unit 4 members, including coverage shifts;
Prioritizes the safety of CUPE Local 3906 Unit 4 members by strengthening the reporting and action processes for health and safety hazards in residences;
Strengthens policies and training to prevent harassment and violence in residence communities; and
Eliminates the pay-to-work mandatory meal plan policy for Community Advisors.
Sincerely,
