ACRL/NY 2024 Symposium : Values in Context: Praxis in the Everyday

In the midst of the recent national and global upheavals, the 2024 ACRL/NY Symposium will explore the core values of library workers and libraries, and examine how those values manifest in the day-to-day work that supports our library communities.  

ACRL’s strategic plan and ALA’s Core Values of access, equity, intellectual freedom and privacy, public good, and sustainability can inform this conversation.  In 2000, the first edition of Michael Gorman’s Our Enduring Values: Librarianship in the 21st Century was published.  Later, in 2015, Gorman published a subsequent edition titled Our Enduring Values Revisited: Librarianship in an Ever-Changing World.  Across the two editions, Gorman identifies stewardship, service, intellectual freedom, rationalism, literacy & learning, equity of access to recorded knowledge & information, privacy, and democracy as foundational to library work.  

In this context, we invite you to engage with these values.  How do we approach competing/conflicting understandings of libraries and these corresponding values?  Is it possible, or desirable, for us to agree at all on a set of common values? If so, what would they be? Are there additional values that we need to consider as we welcome and support our community? How do we apply our values to our daily work? 

The ACRL/NY Symposium Planning Committee invites you to submit a proposal for an enlightening and engaging presentation, lightning talk, panel, or poster to be considered for our Symposium.

Multiple proposals will be considered. 

Potential topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Teaching and learning

    • Anti-racist pedagogy

    • New learning modalities

    • OER

  • Labor in libraries

    • Union work/organizing

    • Perspectives from library staff (non-librarians)

  • Community & Access

    • Social justice

    • Outreach to the community

    • Anti-racism in libraries

    • Digital divide

    • AI influence and impact

    • Minority presses/resources

  • Sustainability 

    • Digital scholarship

    • Open access    

    • Special collections

    • Metadata

    • Facilities

    • Emerging technologies

    • Digital stewardship

  • A critique of a value-driven perspective

Submission Options (presenters may be grouped by topic with other presenters) 

  • Poster

  • Lightning Talk 5-10 minutes

  • Individual Presentation 15-20 minutes

  • Panel (3-5 people) 30-50 minutes

Submit your proposals by 250-500 words (2500 characters) in length via this form below.

Deadline extended to July 12, 2024.

Accepted proposals will be notified by August 28, 2024.

All presentations are delivered in-person on December 6, 2024.  Presenters pay the cost to attend, plus fund their own travel and housing.

The event will take place at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus on December 6, 2024 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
