Red Pocket Press Year of the Rat Zine
In 2020 we welcome the start of a new decade and the beginning of a new zodiac cycle.

Red Pocket Press is seeking contributions for our second queer lunar new year zine, 'Year of the Rat' edition.

We celebrate and honour you!

A portion of our zine sales will go towards Warriors of Aboriginal Resistance in honour of the first storytellers of the Land where most of our work takes place (Narrm/Melbourne, Australia)

What we’d love to see for our Year of the Rat edition:
Letters to the upcoming lunar new year, a new cycle, a new era, a new decade
Poetry, short stories, mixed media, photography, artwork
Letters to your ancestors
Stories of transformation
Fortunes and predictions for year of the rat (the unfortunate and fortunate ones!)
Your rituals and ceremonies to bring in the new year, bless your ancestors, warden off those bad spirits
Memories of delicious food you fancy during this time

We recognize that lunar new year might not bring up the best memories for you. We want to hear about that too.
Some examples include:
Queer/transphobia you’ve experienced during lunar new year and how you got through it, what cycles do you want to break?
Family (chosen or blood) breakups and makeups
Grief stories

The zine will be launched late Jan - early Feb.

Submission Guidelines

Who can submit: Queer/LGBTIQ Asians who celebrate Lunar New Year. We welcome mixed-race folks to submit to our zine because we recognise the history that white Australia continues to erase – namely the experience of queer Aboriginal-Chinese people.

Submissions: open from Monday 2 December 2019 – Mon 6 January 2020.
