To commemorate the Singapore Bicentennial, Singapore Heritage Society (SHS) is conducting a four-part walking workshop series developed based on SHS’s two-year research project on 21 historic places of worship in Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar and Tanjong Malang.

This walking workshop in Telok Ayer focuses on how these six places of worship have tried to create vibrancy and stay relevant in modern Singapore.

The walking trail component will cover :
● Former Fuk Tak Chi Temple (c. 1824)
● Ying Fo Fui Kun (1822)
● Former Nagore Dargah (c. 1828)
● Former Keng Teck Whay Temple / Yu Huang Gong (c. 1831)
● Masjid Al Abrar (1827)
● Thian Hock Keng (1840)

Participants will be guided by SHS researchers, Lynn Wong and Fauzy Ismail, to understand how custodians of these sites view their history, their needs, as well as the challenges for sustaining their communities.

This will be followed by a discussion workshop facilitated by Dr Chua Ai Lin, Executive Director of SHS, introducing concepts relevant to the theme and group discussion by the participants.

Lynn Wong Yuqing and Fauzy Ismail were the project researchers for SHS's 2 year study of 21 historic places of worship in Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar and Tanjong Malang.

Lynn is an independent researcher and film maker who is on a race against time to document and revive disappearing foods, festivals and heritage in Singapore.

Fauzy is architecturally trained. He teaches and conducts research on conservation and Singapore’s architecture & urban heritage.


Dr Chua Ai Lin is the Executive Director of the Singapore Heritage Society, having previously served as its president. Holding a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the National University of Singapore (2008-2014), and currently sits on advisory panels at the National Library Board, National Heritage Board and Urban Redevelopment Authority.
