Without our volunteers, we could not put on this event. Thank you very much for considering helping out. We greatly appreciate those who sign on for the full day, however shifts do not necessarily go for the full event, and can be as short as 4 hours.
Volunteer check-in begins at 8:00 AM. The march begins in McSpadden Park at 11 AM with some pre-march festivities and a community art project. The march leaves McSpadden Park at 12 PM (noon) and we will make our way down Commercial Drive to end at Grandview Park for the festival. The festival will take place from 1 to 5 PM, and involve performances from various artists, feature queer-friendly vendors, and create a space to gather with friends, family, and the community.
Volunteers are expected to attend at least one training session, the last of which will be on the morning of August 3 prior to the march. Volunteers are also expected to firmly commit to attending the Vancouver Dyke March and Festival on August 3, 2019, at the times agreed for their shift.
Please note that last year, alongside other queer marches globally, the Vancouver Dyke March witnessed the greatly increased presence of a coordinated trans-exclusionary radical feminist hate group at our march. We anticipate this group will attend the march again in 2019. Other racist, MRA, and right wing groups have attended or threatened to attend the march in the past. Please consider this when choosing whether to volunteer with us this year, and please also be attentive to your own needs and capacity as well.
If you have any questions, or if your organization would like to send volunteers to help with our event, but cannot commit to marshalling duties and the training listed above, please email us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org as we can always use more hands in other roles.
We will say it again—without our volunteers, we cannot put on this event each year! This is true now more than ever before as we work together towards making the Vancouver Dyke March a safer and more inclusive space in the face of a global rise in reactionary and hate-based politics.
