Lakeside School Horgen (LSH) - TechLabs Classes Spring 2018

Thank you for your interest in the club courses offered by TechLabs at LSH. We are very excited to bring our programs to your school. This Spring (Feb-Jun) the program will be piloted at the Horgen campus only, we hope to return next school year with classes at both Horgen and Küsnacht campuses.

Applications (completed on next page) will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications close January 31, 2018; classes begin February 27.

INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING AND COMPUTER CONCEPTS

This class is appropriate for 8–12 year old children and seeks to teach basic programming and computer science concepts and skills in a structured after-school setting using the TechRocket* curriculum developed by IDTech*, a leading American EdTech company; Swift Playgrounds by Apple Computer and REPL.IT a cloud based programming environment. Younger kids with exceptional proficiency and interest are accepted, extra challenges for older kids will be customized.

The class will focus on four main subjects using fun, story-based development themes:

(1) Python – "Curse of the Unusually High Waves" and "Bad Luck in Space"
(2) Computer Science Concepts using Minecraft Redstone "Bottomless Brunch at Redstone Manor"
(3) REPL.it – Custom coding projects in Python
(4) Swift Playgrounds - Code Blocks, Conditions, Variables - Extracts from modules I, II, III

Some of the concepts kids will be exposed to: Python programming syntax/form, variables, strings, arithmetic operations, conditional operations, relational operations, functions, arguments, logical operators/comparators.

Enrolled students will also have complementary access to all of the on-line courses, which will save students' progress and work, be accessible at home, and will be available should the students have interest in TechRocket*, REPL.IT or Swift programs not covered by this class.

The class meets once a week for 75 minutes on TUESDAYS from 16:00 – 17:15 for 16 weeks; younger kids with exceptional proficiency and interest are accepted, extra challenges for older kids will be customized. Class size is limited to 12 children.

Class meeting schedule: February 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 3, 10, 17, May 8, 15, 22, 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26

Class Fees are 600CHF (includes all necessary software, hardware and program licenses necessary to participate in the course)
