Moving Montañas and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is working together to give elementary school students in our area a unique learning experience and access to our public lands. This program is intended for 4th grade classes

Teachers have the option to receive pre-lesson activity hosted by Friends of Organ Mountains- Desert Peaks and/or the Bureau of Land Management in their classroom. Then the class will get a field trip to Organ Monuments-Desert Peaks (OMDP) National Monument with a local expert.

These field trips are to Dripping Springs Natural Area and begin at the La Cueva Group Site. From there, students will enjoy a ~1.5mile hike and 2-3 educational activities on-site with their guides and teachers.

Students will need to bring lunch and appropriate gear for being outdoors (closed toe shoes, plenty of water, sun protection, appropriate clothing for the weather, etc). Transportation costs will be reimbursed to the school by Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.

  • Optional pre-lesson classroom activity ~ 30-60 minutes*
  • Morning guided hike at La Cueva and outdoor activity ~ 3 hours*

*Time can be adjusted to fit class needs. Please see section 2 for full field trip details.
