Welcome to the AGU GeoHealth series of webinar talks. The GeoHealth section of AGU holds quarterly webinars covering timely topics of interest to our general body.
Title: Future Wildfire Smoke and Health in a Changing ClimateÂ
Abstract:Â
Increasing wildfire smoke has become a lived experience for many people across the United States in recent years. Wildfires produce a complex mixture of pollutants that contribute to a wide range of adverse health outcomes. While previous studies have linked rising fire activity to a changing climate, few have provided a comprehensive and quantitative projection of how future climate change will influence population exposure to smoke pollution and the resulting health effects in the U.S.
This session will present recent research on projected wildfire smoke and associated mortality burdens under future climate scenarios. It will also highlight key research gaps and examine the health and policy dimensions of wildfire smoke, emphasizing how scientific evidence can guide public communication, resilience planning, and policy actions to protect communities as climate-driven fires intensify.
