Study Circle: How can data literacy change how our learners see and think about our world and themselves?

Dear colleague,

I would like to invite you to explore this question with a group of adult educators in an upcoming virtual study circle sponsored by World Education’s EdTech in collaboration with San Francisco State University and University of California, San Francisco.

Communicative Justice Learner Leadership Study Circle We aim to explore the links between data literacy, language learning, and social justice. We want to work together to design reusable classroom activities that support critical themes related to communicative justice, such as:
data fears, speaking data, playing with data, data storytelling, data in healthcare, myth-busting with data, data resilience, and data for community action.

Why this study circle, and why now?

Our learners have powerful stories that should be part of the data that informs what we know about the health and well-being of linguistically diverse populations in the U.S. Our learners also have their own interpretations of the information – the data, images, media campaigns, sound bites -- circulating all around us, especially during this global pandemic.

Do our learners find opportunities to share their stories and interpretations – with other learners, to local communities, to public health professionals, to policymakers?

Unfortunately no.

This study circle – part of a broader project called the Communicative Justice Learner Leadership Project -- seeks to change all that.  We hope to do so by inspiring teachers and learners to change up the way we work with data in our everyday classrooms.

What is the study circle commitment?

  1. Participate in monthly meetings (4 whole group and 4 one-on-one meetings with me) from December 2022 - May 2023 (exact dates TBD with participants). Please see a tentative calendar of Study Circle sessions Timeline CJLL Study Circle

  2. Review sample materials and help design new activities and resources

  3. Try out activities with your own learners between study circle sessions

  4. Complete 3 brief reflective writing exercises

The study circle commitment totals 30 hours (12 hours of synchronous meetings, 18 hours of preparation/reflection work between meetings) over a 4-month period. Thanks to funding from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Patrick McGovern Foundation, we are able to offer a modest honorarium of $1,250  to each study circle participant.

Ideal number of participants is 10-12.

We hope you join us and bring your experience and expertise to this project. Please do not hesitate to contact me with your questions or concerns at 510-621-8653 or mbastias@mail.sfsu.edu
