To the Right Hon. Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney and Mark Speakman SC MP, Minister for Heritage,
This petition of community members, who are citizens of the State of New South Wales, asks that an Interim Heritage Order be issued for the Alexandria Hotel.
The City of Sydney Council recently received a Development Application to demolish the Alexandria Hotel and build 28 new apartments on the site.
The Alexandria Hotel is a site of great importance to the local community. Designed by Rudder and Grout and first built in the 1870s, The Alexandria Hotel has served the community for almost 130 years, operating continuously under the same name.
It is a site with rich history and one of the area’s last remaining links to Alexandria’s pre-war industrial history, forming a corridor from the Eveleigh Rail Yards to the workers cottages and recreational area in Alexandria South.
The Alexandria Hotel maintains much of its original architectural and design aesthetic, both inside and out and is a rare and good example of a highly intact original hotel. It displays high quality design work with outstanding potential, due to its degree of integrity, to continue in its original state.
We the undersigned petitioners ask the City of Sydney Council and Minister for Heritage to consider the impact that destroying a fixture of our community would have on the character of our local area, and ask instead that the Alexandria Hotel is issued with an Interim Heritage Order and investigated as a site of Local Significance for inclusion on the Local Heritage Schedule.
