Practicum (PSYC 391) Student Application
COURSE DESCRIPTION: PSYC 391 Practicum (1-4 credits)
Practicum is an experiential learning course designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain experience at sites in the community where psychology is applied. Practicum students witness first hand how the knowledge, methods, and models they have studied in the classroom apply in real life situations. The hands-on, practical experiences that are provided in practicum are especially valuable for students who intend to seek employment in a human service area upon graduation. Additionally, students considering graduate school in a therapy-related or human service field will also benefit greatly from these structured field experiences.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Enrollment in practicum is selective. It is based on the availability of practicum sites and an appropriate match between the student and available sites. Interested students must apply and a practicum must be arranged before you are allowed to enroll in the course.

REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS BEGINS 1 WEEK BEFORE REGISTRATION.

To apply, you need to do the following:
1. Fully complete this application form.
2. Make an appointment with Dr. Jeppsen (bjeppsen.youcanbook.me) to discuss your practicum interests in more detail.
3. Contact 2 Augustana faculty/staff members who know you in a professional capacity (as your professor and/or supervisor) who you think would be willing to recommend you. One can be a psychology professor, but at least one should come from outside of psychology. Explain to them what the course is / why you want to take it, and tell them when the deadline is (figure out the date that corresponds to one week before registration begins) and ask them if they would be willing to give you a recommendation. If they agree, please ask them to fill out the online form here while logged into their Augie Google account: https://forms.gle/atJj6rxPiZkxmncC9.

Applications are considered complete when these materials have all been received.

We will begin reviewing completed applications 1 week prior to registration, and will contact you by email to inform you whether your application has been accepted. As practicum arrangements off campus often take time to arrange, it is recommended that you enroll in a "backup" class (even if you have been accepted for practicum) in the event that we are unable to find a placement for you. This class should be one that you want to take and will be useful, but you could replace with PSYC 391 without causing long-term problems for your academic plan. Once a practicum placement has been established and we have reliable confirmation from your site supervisor, you will be authorized to enroll in PSYC 391 and drop your backup class.

Please enter the names of the two faculty/staff members that you are requesting recommendation letters from here:

A note on Practicum credit hours:
Practicum credit requires 40 hours on site per credit hour enrolled across the course of the semester. Most students take practicum for 3 credits. This requires a commitment of 120 hours on site plus meetings with the practicum supervisor on campus. This works to about 8-10 hours per week when breaks and finals are considered. Hours available to you will depend on the sites/opportunities that are available.
