Celebrate Canada 150 by planting your own FREE native tree!
Hamilton Naturalists’ Club (HNC) has been protecting natural areas and forests in Hamilton since 1919. Now we want to provide trees to homeowners to help nature where we need it most – in your neighbourhood! HNC has partnered with Environment Hamilton, who has been working to improve Hamilton’s air quality for over 15 years. Together we are planting more trees to bring nature back to the city while improving air quality.

Trees around our homes provide myriad benefits to the city, our neighbourhoods, and to our health and well-being. Trees filter pollutants from our air, keep us cool in the summer, reduce pressure on our storm-water management systems, make urban residents healthier, provide habitat for other species and enhance biodiversity in our city.

You can help by planting a tree in your yard - we can help by giving you a tree!

Thanks to support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Hamilton Community Foundation in partnership with the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, the HNC has created a program to help homeowners to plant the right tree in the right place.

The only ‘catch’ is that the HNC wants to make sure that your planting site is suitable and that the tree will continue to thrive! You are responsible for choosing your suitable planting location and performing a locate (no cost to you, visit www.on1call.com or call 1-800-400-2255). We ask that you care for your tree with regular watering and TLC. Share your tree planting story and progress photos with us using the hashtag #treesplease150, and inspire other Hamilton residents to plant trees and care about growing our urban forest!

So how does this work?
1. If you’d like to participate in this program, first check that your proposed planting site meets our minimum space requirements:

Area of soft surface (not paved, ex. grass or garden) required
Shrubs: 1 x 1 m

3 x 3 m (small trees)

Distance from fence/property line
Shrubs: 1 m
Trees: 1 m

Distance from hard surfaces (deck/paving)

Choose the tree best suited to your planting site. Note: we cannot guarantee the tree you want, but we will try our best to provide one within the same size class. Trees are first-come, first-served.

2. You are responsible for performing a locate and ordering an ON1Call visit to locate underground lines before adopting a tree.

3. Come pick up your free native tree, mulch/mulch mats, and tree care information at one of our pre-arranged dates and locations. Tree will be in a three gallon pot and will fit easily into a car and be light to carry.

4. Remember to share your photos and stories with us on social media using the hashtag #treesplease150. Contact us if you have any further questions!
