Position Description:
The positions are based within the Synthetic Microbiology Laboratory located in the UWA School of Molecular Sciences. The lab uses multi-disciplinary approaches to undertake a range of fundamental and applied research projects in synthetic and systems biology. A recent focus of the lab is developing Vibrio natriegens (Vnat), the fastest-growing bacterium on the planet, into a platform for sustainable biotech applications. The PhD projects can focus on a diverse range of fundamental and applied problems, e.g. uncovering the origin of Vnat's rapid metabolism, building novel synbio tools, and working on metabolic engineering problems to exploit its rapid metabolism for the production of platform chemicals. 

Qualifications Required:
Bachelor (Honours) or Master’s degree in Synthetic Biology, Metabolic Engineering, Biotechnology, or related fields.
Skills in microbial strain engineering, fermentation processes, metabolic modelling, bioinformatics, and analytical and separation chemistry techniques (HPLC, LC-MS, etc) are advantageous.
High level of motivation; strong team-playing, problem-solving and communication skills.
Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

Funding and Stipend:
The positions are fully funded for 3 years (extensions possible), including a competitive stipend of AU$35,000 p.a., tuition fees, and a budget for research expenses and travel.
