The New School Archives and Special Collections preserve and make available for research historical materials, with a focus on the history of The New School. To achieve these purposes, the following rules govern the use of the collections. Access Requests to access collections will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Completion of an application to examine materials and a reference interview are required. Procedures Food or beverages are not permitted in the archives. Personal property not essential to the researcher's work must be kept away from the reading room tables. Collections do not circulate and are not available for browsing. A staff member will bring materials to the reading room tables. The use of certain collections may be restricted by statute, by the office of origin, or by the donor. The New School Archives and Special Collections may also impose restrictions when the materials (i) contain confidential information; (ii) have not been processed; or (iii) are exceptionally valuable or fragile. The original order and arrangement of all materials must be preserved. Items must remain in their folders while being examined. In addition, folders must always be returned to their original location within a box. Materials must be handled by their edges; pages must be turned carefully. The archives' staff may request that researchers use cotton gloves. Archival materials may not be traced or written on. The use of pens is prohibited. Cell phones may not be used in the archives. Tape recorders and photographic and computer equipment may be used only with the permission of archives staff. The New School Archives and Special Collections reserves the right to examine research notes and any personal property used at the reading room tables. Mutilation, destruction, and theft of New School Archives & Special Collections materials are subject to prosecution. Reproduction Facsimile reproductions will be provided at the archivists' sole discretion. These copies may only be used for the purpose of private study and reference. The staff will produce all reproductions; a schedule of fees is available upon request. Registration and Conditions of Use Agreement Permissions Permission to reproduce, publish (including posting online in blogs, social media, websites, web presentations, and other online venues), distribute, exhibit, perform, adapt, or otherwise display materials held by The New School Archives and Special Collections requires the written permission of the copyright holder. In addition, permission for use must be obtained in writing from The New School Archives and Special Collections, whether or not it is the copyright holder. It is the responsibility of the researcher to secure all appropriate permissions prior to subjecting the material to its intended use. Acknowledgement Use of materials in any manner as described above must be accompanied by proper citation. Please consult the archivist prior to use for proper citation. The New School Archives and Special Collections requests a complimentary copy of any publication in any format that may result from research in its archives. I have read the conditions of use and agree to abide by them. I realize that I am responsible for conforming to copyright, right-to-privacy, libel, slander, and any other applicable federal and state statutes. I agree to indemnity and hold harmless The New School, its officers, employees, and agents from any and all claims resulting from the use of the materials.
