The Brian Picone Award for Leadership & Advocacy Excellence
NOMINATIONS DUE FRIDAY APRIL 20th, 2018
The Brian Picone Award for Leadership & Advocacy Excellence will be administered by the GMU Lambda Alumni Chapter and given out at Mason's annual Lavender Graduation at the Fairfax campus of George Mason University. The winner of the award must be present at the Graduation ceremony and be prepared to speak for a few minutes about receiving the award.
Brian Picone was the inaugural speaker at George Mason's first Lavender Graduation in 2009. He was an incredibly prominent member of the LGBTQ community at Mason. He was involved with Pride Alliance, the undergraduate student group; the Safe Zone program, which educates members of the community on inclusiveness and LGBTQ terminology, language, and equality; and regularly performed as Brianna Spice in Mason Drag Shows. He graduated from the New Century College Program, where he was awarded the Outstanding Integrative Studies Graduate of 2009 Award and an Integrative Studies Academic Excellence Award. Brian had a passion and desire for learning from and educating others on feminist theory, cultural equality, and socio‐cultural issues. Brian was both extremely active in the larger picture of activism and organizing; and also present, generous, and loving to each individual person he encountered. Most importantly, he had a spot in everyone's heart who knew him.
