Share Your Experiences: Policing, Discipline and Behaviour in Schools

If you've had experience of policing, discipline, or behaviour management in schools —whether as a young person, parent, carer, teacher, school staff member, or in another way—you're invited to share your story.

There are different ways you can take part:

  • The form below provides some structure and prompts to guide you, which some people find helpful.  If you'd prefer a simpler version of this form with shorter questions and optional tick boxes, you can fill in the Easy Read version.

  • If you’d prefer to share your experiences outside of the form structure, you can email schoolpoliceresearch@manchester.ac.uk or send a message or voice note via WhatsApp +447353139936

  • Creative contributions like poetry or artwork are also welcome. If you'd like to share something in a different format, just get in touch and we’ll work out the best way to receive it.

This form is anonymous so that people can share their experiences as safely and openly as possible. Names or personal details won’t be used in anything published from the research. A small number of people may be contacted for a follow-up interview. If that happens, they can choose whether or not they want to be named. Your contribution is voluntary, and by submitting your testimony, you are giving consent for it to be included in this research. You can withdraw your testimony at any time before it is anonymised, and you do not need to give a reason - just send an email or WhatsApp message.

If you are under 16, please seek permission from a parent or guardian before submitting.

This research is led by Dr Remi Joseph-Salisbury (Reader in Sociology, University of Manchester).

If you have any questions, feel free to contact at schoolpoliceresearch@manchester.ac.uk or via WhatsApp at  +447353139936.

1. Please share any experiences with police and policing in schools here.

This could be something that happened to you (your experience/story) or something you saw (you’ve witnessed in schools).

(If relevant, please feel free to mention the kind of school or setting this happened in — for example, primary, secondary, college, PRU — and roughly when it took place.)
What area(s) did your experiences with police take place in?
(Optional – this helps us understand where these experiences are happening. You can just name a city, borough, or general area if you’re happy to.)
2. Which of the following describes your role or experience in relation to policing in or around schools? *
(Tick all that apply - recent experiences are especially helpful)
Required
3. What do you think about police officers being in schools? Do you feel it’s a good idea, a bad idea, or something else? Please explain why you think this.
4.  Please share any experiences you’ve had of wider school practices around discipline, monitoring, surveillance, or punishment. You can include how these experiences made you feel.
This might include, for example, interactions with teachers.
5. Have you noticed anything about how policing, discipline and behaviour management in schools affect different groups of people?
For example, have you seen or experienced anyone being treated differently based on their race, gender, class, or something else (or perhaps things like where they're from, how much money they have, or their background)? If this doesn’t feel relevant to your experience, you can skip this question.
6. Would you be happy to be contacted for a possible follow-up conversation?
*Most people who complete this form will not be contacted, but a small number of responses may be followed up to explore particular experiences or perspectives in more detail. This might be based on the nature of the story shared, a wish to hear more about a particular theme, or to centre particular voices (e.g. young people). If you're not contacted, please know that your contribution is still very much valued.

6. If follow-up contact is agreed to above, please share contact details below (email or phone number). These details will only be used for this purpose and will not be shared.
7. Is there anything else you’d like to share? This could include any access needs, questions, or anything else you’d like to share (including poetry, artwork, or creative responses).
