Wildfire Mutual Aid Interest Form
Sunrise Bay Area is organizing mutual aid and other forms of lasting support for communities most impacted by the worsening wildfires, smoke, extreme heat.
We are providing support and resources to organizations already mobilizing mutual aid in response to fires (e.g. providing masks, air filters, water, etc) and working to identify/fill gaps that these organizations aren’t already covering. We are partnering with Common Humanity Collective, Disability Justice Culture Club, Berkeley Mutual Aid, and other Bay Area mutual aid organizations to raise funds, organize for structural change, and make wildfire preparedness supplies such as face masks and air filters that protect from hazardous smoke.
Our goal is to give people feeling grief, depression or helplessness about the climate crisis a concrete and community-oriented way to take action and feel empowered about supporting one another because THAT is the future we are building.
This work shifts the narrative from “Wildfire season sucks, California isn’t livable anymore” to: “This is a difficult and sobering new reality that Californians cannot ignore or abandon. We must prepare to help each other through fire season and extreme heat with radical community-based empathy and care, because our home and our community’s health and resilience is always worth fighting for.”
We do not give up on the places and people we love.
Building community and supporting each other while we prepare for and respond to fire season is part of our strategy to change the systems that created the climate crisis and build a better world together. Our most recent event, a community potluck and mask build, was only the beginning and we can't wait to take these efforts further with you on our team!
