Abstract of the talk:
What is common to Apple turning brown? Nickel surface turning golden?? Nanoscale particles dispersed in water pulled into oil??? All these are based on chemical reactions that happen on surfaces. Surface may be defined as that part of the material that is in direct contact with its surroundings. In Science we generally associate a property to a material. Interestingly the material in bulk and the material on the surface may exhibit different properties. This becomes true especially when we decrease size of matter/material that we are talking about. This is mainly due to the difference in the way the atoms/molecules at the surfaces are bonded to their neighbours as compared to those in the bulk. Surface chemistry finds its applications in industry as well as in daily life. During this talk we will introduce various aspects related to surfaces and their properties. We will also demonstrate some experiments such as turning nickel surface to golden (electroless plating) and pulling particles from water to oil (surface modification).
