OSS 2018 Skin Swimming application form
We expect the vast majority of swimmers in the Bantham Swoosh, Dart 10k and Hurly Burly to wear a wetsuit. This is because over the course of an event that lasts several hours, everyone's body will cool, and most people will be at risk of developing some level of hypothermia. There are some great articles about how the body reacts to cold water on the OSS website at www.outdoorswimmingsociety.com

Full length triathlon/ swimming wet suits ("wrist-to-ankle neoprene") are compulsory unless by prior arrangement. To allow us to give approval, we ask for your previous experience of extensive outdoor endurance swimming in 2018 so far to be documented and approved. The deadline for completing this form is 1 May for the Bantham Swoosh and Saturday 15 July 2018 for the Dart 10k and Hurly Burly. You will then be informed of our decision within a month, and by 25 July 2018 at the latest.

For non-wetsuit swimmers we are looking for three things:

1. Previous documented experience of long distance swimming without a wetsuit in similar temperatures, e.g. the Channel, Windermere one-way, BLDSA events, Swimtrek.

2. Current training at similar water temperatures (anticipated 15 degrees)

3. Willingness to undertake a long distance practice swim prior to the event of a similar distance and a similar temperature prior to the event, to ensure you do not become hypothermic.

Our decision on Skin Swimming applications will be final and no discussion will be entered into. Please put down as much detail as you can on this form, as we won't be accepting more information afterwards. To give the strongest application, you may want to wait until shortly before the form closing date of 1 May (for the Bantham Swoosh) or 15 July (for the Dart 10k and Hurly Burly) to give yourself the strongest possible application. We understand the attraction of skin swimming, this is just a question of event safety: If we have a lot of inexperienced non- wetsuit swimmers being pulled out because of cold, it will affect the safety cover of the rest of the event. Should we be unable to grant non-wetsuit permission we advise swimmers to be prepared to wear a wetsuit. Alternatively, you will have until 15 May (for the Bantham Swoosh) or 31 July (for the Dart 10k and Hurly Burly) to transfer your place to another swimmer.

To ensure we are as able as possible to give you the consent you want, do please try to gain the experience and training we need to see, and remember to complete this form by 1 May (for the Bantham Swoosh) or 15 July (for the Dart 10k and Hurly Burly)

Monitored Test Swim
I agree to complete a test swim – 1.5 to 2 hours – in open water or unheated lido without a wetsuit prior to the event to make sure I do not experience mild hypothermia and feel comfortable swimming without a wetsuit. We strongly advise that the test swim is monitored for your own safety. *
