Welcome to the Safety Around Water Class!!
This program's curriculum is comprised of a Classroom-Based "Safety Around Water" which has been tested and shown to produce positive results. The YMCA believes that one way to reduce drowning incidents among children ages 4 through 14 is to teach water safety education in schools and other youth programs. The YMCA created Classroom-Based Safety Around Water tools and resources to help YMCAs teach children about safe behavior in, on, and around the water.
The Classroom-Based Safety Around Water tools are designed to give children an awareness of being safe around water and help promote safe aquatic recreation.
The 6 lessons teach children about water safety in different environments using specific safety topics.
The topics include Module 1: Pool Safety - Module 2: Community Helpers - Module 3: Helping Others - Module 4: Fun in the Sun and Safe Swimming Areas - Module 5: Important Swimming Skills and Lifejacket safety -Module 6: Safety Around Water at Home, on Vacation, or while Babysitting
The modules provide an opportunity to learn water safety concepts outside the aquatic environment. Presentations will be delivered in conjunction with formal swimming lessons. Swimming skills are only part of the solution to drowning prevention. It is important that youth also develop water safety knowledge as a part of water competency.
Water competency means being able to anticipate, avoid, and survive common drowning situations, and recognize and aid those in need. It includes water safety awareness, basic swimming skills, and helping others.
Let’s not let this ever happen again under our watch!
