Designing for Compassion: A Community Pet Care Survey

This is part of a UX research project focused on improving local systems for lost, stray, and adoptable animals. Some questions may touch on sensitive topics such as animal euthanasia and shelter overcrowding. Your honest input will help inform a design solution that supports animal welfare and makes it easier for people to get involved or adopt.

Your feedback matters and will contribute to creating a more compassionate, accessible experience for both animals and our community.

Many communities, face challenges with stray and lost animals due to factors like abandonment or financial strain. If you were given a way to help, what would be the most manageable or realistic way for you to get involved?

*

When you see a cat or other animal outside, how do you usually decide whether it's lost or just an outdoor pet? Are you familiar with the county’s lost and found resources?

*

Many people post about stray or adoptable animals on apps like NextDoor or Facebook. Do you use any of these platforms to find or share lost pet info? Would it help to have one specialized, centralized place for these posts?

*

Some shelters euthanize animals due to overcrowding or behavior concerns. If there were a digital profile for each animal—shared across all local shelters—do you think it would improve the chances for adoption? Why or why not?

*

To increase the chances of adoption, would seeing details like ‘good with kids’ or ‘needs quiet home’ help you or someone you know feel more confident about adopting? What traits would you want highlighted?

*

Have you or someone you know ever had difficulty using a website or app because of small text, complicated layouts, or confusing instructions?

*

Do you think the app or website should include features like screen reader support, voice commands, or keyboard-only navigation? Why or why not?

*

Have you or someone you know had trouble understanding government or shelter websites because of complex language or lack of translation?

*

Would it be helpful if the app/site showed a live map of recent stray sightings or pet locations? Why or why not?

*

Have you ever run into issues using a site or app because of slow internet or data limits? Would it be helpful to have a quick way to report an animal sighting or unsafe condition on the app/site? What would make that process simple?
