SYMPOSIUM THEME

Applied linguistics: Looking forward and looking backward
The field of applied linguistics and language teaching is constantly experiencing change and challenges. Many of us find it necessary to transform our practices and knowledge in accordance with sudden shifts and changes in the social, physical and technological environments in which we work and live. To survive and thrive in our complex world, we need the ability to look backward as well as forward. As we adapt ourselves and prepare for the future, we also need to revisit our past experiences and use our past knowledge. This year’s theme is thus ‘Applied linguistics: Looking forward and looking backward’. The symposium will explore how we as applied linguists, language educators, practitioners and/or researchers consider our past experiences and knowledge from the profession to inform and shape our engagement with students, colleagues and the discipline in the present and with an eye to the future.

Presentation types:
Presentations: The standard 20-minute presentation type, followed by five minutes for questions

Colloquiums: This 50-minute colloquium will have about 3 or 4 presenters, guided by a facilitator. Each presenter will make a short 10-minutue presentation. The facilitator needs to submit an overall abstract for the colloquium and abstracts for each presenter. Preference will be given to innovative and thought-provoking perspectives.

Printed posters: Poster presentations will be displayed in the foyer of the symposium venue.
