Many older adults living with disabilities in the community rely on paid care, such as home and community-based services, provided by direct care workers like home care aides and personal care attendants. The quality and delivery of this care can vary significantly, especially for racial and ethnic minority older adults and those with complex conditions such as dementia. This presentation will explore the implications of paid care delivery for older adults from diverse backgrounds living with disabilities, their family care partners, and the direct care workers who support them in the community. Attendees will have a chance to join the conversation during the Q&A at the end of the event.
The Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation is proud to host Dr. Chanee Fabius as our featured speaker.
Dr. Chanee Fabius is a gerontologist and health services researcher with an interdisciplinary background in gerontology, human development and family studies, and public health. Her research aims to inform aging and disability policies to reduce health care disparities and improve health equity for older adults and people with disabilities using long-term services and supports (LTSS). With applied care management experience, she has helped older adults remain at home and delay the need for nursing home care. Dr. Fabius’s work focuses on understanding networks of care in LTSS, examining the effects of community-based LTSS use on the care experiences of older adults and their caregivers, and strengthening the direct care workforce providing care to older adults with complex health conditions such as dementia. She completed a two-year AHRQ-funded T32 Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research at the Brown School of Public Health in 2018 and earned her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Connecticut in 2016.
