Pataphysics Playwriting Workshop: Mfoniso Udofia's Writing the Epic
The Pataphysics Playwriting Workshops at The Flea Theater are intimate, intensive sessions for new work and new ways of working. Named for Alfred Jarry’s science of imaginary solutions, the workshops are a gymnasium for the writing brain—curious, particular, and rigorous. Students enter with blank sheets of paper, and leave with pages of notes, fragments, scenes, even entire plays unlike anything they would have written on their own. The workshops are structured around the idea that whatever is most immediately interesting to a teacher will make for the most engaging class. They’re an opportunity for writers, emerging and experienced, to challenge their own assumptions using strange muscles and surprising parts of the brain.

The next Pataphysics Playwriting Workshop, led by Mfoniso Udofia ("Sojourners" and "Her Portmanteau" at New York Theatre Workshop), will be held on December 8, 9, and 16 at The Flea Theater in Tribeca. Each session will run from 10:00 - 2:00, for a total of 12 hours. Acceptance to the Workshop is by application. Each Workshop is limited to 12 writers, and the course costs $250 with a limited number of partial scholarships available.

The focus of Mfoniso Udofia’s Pataphysics Workshop is Writing the Epic:

Choruses, poetics, non-traditional dramatic structures… how do we compose the literary majestic? And even more challenging: How do we keep the epic rooted in human authenticity? Content and material will focus on the big dreamers of dramatic literature and we will explore dramatists from our shores and beyond. And, of course, alongside understanding the dreamings of others, we will start imagining and then creating epics of our own.

To apply for this Pataphysics Workshop, please submit a cover letter expressing your interest in the course and your philosophy as a writer, a writing sample of 10 continuous pages, and a resume. If you would like to be considered for a partial need-based scholarship, please indicate that in your cover letter.
