Our Docents are an integral part of our Education Department and they help with all facets of our department. Docents help with programs such as Zoo2Us, guided tours, events, and Storytimes just to name a few! Docents also directly help with the care of our ambassador animal collection by preparing their food and assisting in the cleaning of their enclosures. Docents can also help with office work and general cleaning/organizing of all education areas.
No experience is needed to become a docent and we welcome all to become part of our team. However due to safety restrictions, the minimum age to become a Docent is 16 years old. We will teach you everything that you need to know on the job! Our Docents are selected through a short interview process to see if you will be a good fit for the department! If selected, you are required to attend a Docent training class before becoming a Docent. These classes will have an at home video portion that will need to be completed before the start of training. These classes are offered monthly on an enrollment basis. There is a $50 enrollment fee that covers your name tag and your first Docent shirt that is due at the beginning of docent training. Docents will also be required to complete a CPS background check before being allowed on programs. Docents are allowed to drive the zoo vehicle, but they must be 21 years or older and submit a driving record. In order to stay a Docent, it is required to volunteer 50 hours a year and 12 hours of that should be continuing education.
