Plastic pollution is indeed a critical threat for all living beings, so capping its production is the only sustainable solution. In March 2022, a resolution was adopted at the UN Environmental Assembly to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. The resolution requested the UNEP to convene an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop the instrument that addresses the full life cycle of plastic, starting from production, design to disposal.
Negotiations are underway and so far 5 INCs have been convened and the second part of the 5th INC is planned in August 2025. While curation of the global and legally binding instrument marks a pivotal milestone in combating plastic pollution, it is critical that it is made a matter of discussion among the youth groups who work on climate change and plastic waste management avenues.
