THE MAGNIFICENT LOTUS FLOWER
Read the text and answer the questions.
The lotus flower grows in South Asia. It can be found in Asian temples, art, medicines and cuisine. The flower, young leaves, seed and stems are all edible and the dried stamens are used to make aromatic tea.
Lotus flowers float on the surface of muddy water. The flowers open in the morning and close in the evening. The lotus plant is adapted to living in water, the rhizomes attach it to the bottom of the pond and its round, flat leaves have air pockets that keep it gloating on the surface.
The lotus plant can reproduce sexually using pollen and seeds, or asexually through rhizomes. The seeds grow in a large pod in the centre of the flower. When the seeds are ripe, the pod tips down and the seeds fall into the water. Incredibly, some ancient lotus seeds remained dormant for more than 1,000 years before germinating!
