ALCS Workshop Dutch Language Tutors, 28 June 2018
The Association for Low Countries Studies (ALCS) would like to invite you for a half-day workshop for Tutors of Dutch at the University of Sheffield on Thursday 28 June.

The ALCS aims to support all tutors, lecturers and researchers of Dutch and Dutch Studies in the UK and Ireland. A recent ALCS survey has shown that Dutch is getting increasingly popular within Institution wide Language Programmes. We are keen to support the IWLP tutors, which is why we are writing to you.

This workshop, lunch, refreshments, reception and lecture are all free of charge. We also have a small pot to help out with travel costs if your institution does not cover your travel expenses. If you want to make use of that, please contact ALCS@

Why and what?
Tutors of Dutch often don’t have the benefit of colleagues. The ALCS Workshop is first and foremost an opportunity to meet colleagues from other institutions, to swap ideas and share good practice. We have also invited drs. Vera de Bot (Universiteit Amsterdam). Vera de Bot is an experienced Dutch Language tutor (Sheffield, Philadelphia, Amsterdam) author of Dutch course books and a master at new techniques, games and suggestions to engage language learners.

This is our schedule:
12.00 Arrival, Registration and Lunch
Chancellor’s Room, Firth Court, University of Sheffield
13.00 Workshop Part 1
14.45 Tea/Coffee Break
15.15 Workshop Part 2
16.30 Evaluation and Planning
16.45 Workshop finishes
17.00 Opening of ALCS Conference: Picturing Reality
18.15 Wine Reception

In addition to the Workshop, you are invited to attend the Opening of the ALCS Conference with a lecture by Prof Lotte Jensen (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen) followed by a wine reception. This will give you a further opportunity to network with colleagues, representatives of the Dutch Language Union (Taalunie), the Dutch Embassy, and Flanders House.

After the reception, all conference delegates go for our Conference Dinner. You are also warmly invited to join us, but this will be at your own expense (£25). If you want to stay in Sheffield overnight, you can stay in our Conference Hotel for £25 (Jonas Hotel). Please get in touch if you want to make use of this offer.

We ask you to register for our Workshop using the fom below.

On our website ( you will find more information about the ALCS. We are also on Facebook and Twitter.

We are keen to hear from you even if you cannot come this time.

Met hartelijke groet,
Henriette Louwerse, Sheffield (Chair ALCS)
Anna Geurts, Nottingham (Director ALCS)
